The third installment of this little series is bringing it to a standstill because the other books in the BONE SEASON series aren't out yet! Cue me sobbing relentlessly, because what am I supposed to with my life until then besides live vicariously through these books??
I have many feelings over SONG RISING as I'm sure you'll see and it just further cemented how much this series means to me and how much I love it! So enjoy reading my thoughts as I was reading SONG RISING while I go and wrap myself in several duvets and mourn the wait for the next book.
SCREAMING AND FANGIRLING THOUGHTS I HAD WHILE READING:
- Something that I’m wondering now that we’re three books into the series of seven: I struggled with THE BONE SEASON at times because it spent a lot of it setting up the series and setting up things to happen in THE MIME ORDER so MIME ORDER was perfection...I felt like SONG RISING did what BONE SEASON did: an excellent novel but still it’s focus was not on itself but building up the next book so it felt distracted at times. Because BONE SEASON 4 hasn’t come out yet it’ll be interesting to see if I was right.
- More Maria! I spent half of SONG RISING suspicious of everyone and especially Maria but now I’m Maria Trash and I want mooooooore of her!
- I’m sorry, you know how I said I loved the slow burn in MIME ORDER? How I parroted on about how wonderful I thought it was that Warden and Paige were taking their romance/relationship so slowly? WELL I AM DONE WITH SLOWLY. If I thought MIME ORDER was slow burn, I am sorry, but SONG RISING slows it down more. Not really helped thanks to a certain fuckwit and their fucking ear worms (YOU KNOW WHO I'M TALKING ABOUT, THEIR NAME STARTS WITH COUGH COUGH J) but as Paige and Warden spend a lot of the book with trust issues with each other, it takes a while to get the Paige and Warden train going again (although it’s rich to even say their train was moving in the first place, if anything IT’S STILL NOT MOVING AT ALL).
- How the actual hell is Paige still alive when you think about it? Like...do the maths. Count the fights she's been in, the torture, the broken bones, bruises, cuts, loss of blood etc. The lack of time to rest and heal before she's being tortured again or in another fight or training...hOW IS SHE STILL BREATHING.
- I’m telling you BONE SEASON 4 better have Warden and Paige doing more together than MIME ORDER and SONG RISING both combined (which isn’t even much to ask when thinking about what happens in those two books)!!
- I wish a **certain person** had appeared earlier. I felt like they was almost brought out at the end like a magic trick just to confirm they were still alive and still being just as much of a little troll as they were when they were thought to be alive???
- The only thing that really pissed me off was when Paige spent most of the book mistrusting Warden and hating on herself for mistrusting Warden because of what A Certain Little Troll Bastard Who Better Die Really Badly At Some Point In This Series I Swear To God said. It made any scenes with the both of them in it quite painful and awkward to read - WHICH I GET WAS THE POINT - but still wasn’t fun to read about??!! I am so glad they’ve managed to sort their shit out (or the little troll’s asdgggjgjgj fuck I hate that character) more or less by the end of SONG RISING but I sense more shit to come (of course, I mean, this whole series is pAIN) but I will take a wobbly relationship over a broken non-existent one thank you very much!!
- Paige is painfully Gryffindor but not annoyingly so?? Like I hate Gryffindor main characters and live for the Slytherin ones but Paige is *such* a Gryffindor and I'd still die for her??
- As usual the magic happens in the second half of the book AKA the second half of all the books in the series (so far) is much better than the first half!
- I love Eliza’s growth in this series!
- Only cried when I got to the past page of SONG RISING (partly from the
realization that I had such a long wait ahead of me for the next book
but also SONG RISING) whereas I cried buckets all throughout while reading MO.
The last line of SR really got me though and I don’t know why!: “I
waited for the sun to rise -- as it always had, like a song from the
night.” ← I FEEL LIKE SOBBING JUST READING IT BACK WHYYYY.
